Condé Nast Traveler recently claimed you as a hot spot...but Charleston, you have always been my number ONE

The first time I ever set foot in this captivating city was circa 1999. There is something about the symmetry of the place and its crooked porches, floating doors, and cobblestone streets that twirls our minds so effortlessly. The colors. The water. The humid yet soothing air. I have attempted myriad times to sit and put it all in words; however, it is merely impossible. The peninsula is so near and dear to my heart, it holds history and lackadaisical tales of friendships, lust, you name it.
Claim it a large hub of (the most) attractive people, some of the best cuisine ever crafted, best golf spots. Those all associate with "Charleston - the brand." As an honored citizen of this city, I take pride in every little bit of it for what it has been, what it is, and what it will continue being: a paradise. To me, it is and always will be, the greatest place in America. Its boutique feel reminds me of Europe, which I daydream of regularly.
Most of us that live here are true city fanatics. I am a graduate of the College of Charleston; however, as great as the school is...my city pride outweighs that for the educational institution. Of course, many of us face the issue of having to leave Neverland after those lovely four (or more) years are over. Main reason: lack of jobs/cannot afford the bougie lifestyle.

Nonetheless, everyone tries to stick around for as long as possible, engaging in whatever career they can, just to live the dream. This city does have a survival of the fittest vibe - in many ways. The female:male ratio is rough, we have a very highly educated staff of servers, parking is limited (get a bicycle), the rents match those of large cities like Boston and London...the list goes on. Some of us are fortunate and have it all; however, there is no elevator to the top. You have to take the stairs.

But one sunrise spent on the battery is enough to convince you that it is worth it. So is a stroll through the neighborhood packed with 170+ year old houses, an afternoon soaking up the sun, an evening sipping on wine as the city settles for the night. Oh, just joking...this place never sleeps.

Charleston is so coy and elegant. How can you not fall for the charm?

I have left and come right back countless times, always embraced back with wide open arms by my favorite place. The constant good reviews are genuine and consistent, it brings me joy to share this place with those unfamiliar with it. Maybe I am not the biggest fan of the fanny pack cruise shippers (who is...really?), but their curiosity to come and explore is well respected.

The vast and quite haste popularity shocked all of us. Charleston, as you get "cooler" and become a playground to all sorts of new faces, do not forget those that have adored you from the start. Just saying.

Driving into the peninsula is captivating, the moment I enter the city, I know everything will be alright. Cannot recall a single time that there was a frown on my face rather than a smile after passing the "Welcome to Charleston - All American City" sign on I-26. Whatever troubles there may be, they can wait. I am home.

If there really is such a thing as a "first" love, Charleston is mine.

  1. Charleston is: Sunday brunch, sunset jogs by the battery, and keg stands with the people you love.
